In 1999 at a modest gathering, the Foundation hosted its very first annual gala honoring Mayor Richard M. Daley with the Distinguished Award for Excellence. That event operated at a loss. However since, the event has ended up raising millions of dollars for the Foundation’s mission and is considered one of the premier black-tie events in the space.
