The Illinois Bar Foundation is proud to award Judge Russell Hartigan, Ret. and Michael Scalzo for their many dedicated years of service to the IBF and the Lawyers Care Fund Committee. Proceeds of this event will benefit the Warren Lupel Lawyers Care Fund, which has provided financial assistance to lawyers and their families in times of crisis since 1951.
ABOUT OUR HONOREES
Judge Russell W. Hartigan, Ret., a Gold Champion and proud Lincoln Legacy Society member of the IBF, served as a board member and a dedicated Lawyers Care committee member from 2004-19. During his tenure in IBF leadership, Judge Hartigan served on the Illinois State Bar Association’s Board of Governors and several section councils. He was elected as ISBA Secretary and Treasurer, and later on, became the ISBA’s 141st President from 2017-18. Judge Hartigan rejoined the IBF Board the year after his presidency and continues to be an active member in both organizations. Installed as a Judge for the Circuit Court of Cook County in the Law Division and Fifth Municipal district from 2010-17, Judge Hartigan has had extensive experience in mediation and cases representing plaintiffs and defendants, including casualty and municipal defense, workers compensation, and personal injury. As a J.D. graduate from the John Marshall Law School and B.A. graduate from DePaul University, he returned to academia as a frequent lecturer to both schools in addition to Northwestern University and Chicago Kent College of Law – IIT Law School.
Michael J. Scalzo, Founder of Scalzo Law and Bronze Champion of the IBF, served on the IBF Board of Directors from 2003-06 and has served nearly 20 years on the Illinois Bar Foundation’s Lawyers Care Committee. Michael is a longtime Illinois State Bar Association member and has been appointed to the ADR and Family Law Section Councils, bringing invaluable family law experience to the table. A longtime member of the DuPage County Bar Association, Michael has also worked as the organization’s General Counsel and as an Executive Committee throughout the years. His commitment to legal aid is evident in his experience as a member and President of the DuPage Legal Assistance Foundation as well as a member and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of Prairie State Legal Services. In recognition of his many contributions to the legal community, Michael was awarded the DuPage Justinian Society’s “Man of the Year” Award in 2016. Michael has been a court-appointed divorce mediator, court approved civil law mediator, and certified divorce arbitrator, involving cases of custody, maintenance, removal, college education expenses, and other financial matters. As a J.D. graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, Michael Scalzo currently resides in Wheaton, Illinois.
